On the island of Pharos, off the Nile Delta's western edge
The lighthouse of Alexandria (also called the Pharos of Alexandria) is a lighthouse that lit the way for sailors into the tricky harbor on the island of Pharos. The lighthouse was the idea of Ptolemy Soter who took command over Egypt after Alexanders death, he ordered construction in 290 B.C and it was finally finished in 247 B.C.
The Main architect was a man named Sostras and the lighthouse consisted of three parts:
- The bottom rectangular portion that was 183.4 feet high
- The middle part that was shaped like an octagon which was 90 feet high
- The highest part was a cylinder and was 24 feet high
The total height was around 384 feet, which in modern times is about 40 stories.
There was a fire that burns at night for arriving ships, and during the day there was a mirror that reflected the suns rays. Legend also says the mirror could burn any enemy ship approaching the harbor. The lighthouse stood for centuries, first as a beacon to travelers then as a tribute to the greatness of hellenistic civilization.
The lighhouse was finally brought down by two earthquakes the first in 1303 and the second one in 1323, but at that point it had already fallen into disrepair because the arab conqueror of Egypt did not keep it up. The absolute end of the lighthouse was in 1480 when the Egyptian Mamelouk Sultan, Qaitbay decided to fortify Alexanders defence, he built a med-evil fort where the lighthouse had stood, he used the fallen stone and marble to build this fort.
The light house of Alexandria stood on Pharos Island in the East Harbour of Alexandria, the second largest town of Egypt. Founded by Alexander the great, Alexandria lies on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt.
The lighthouse of Alexandria, which is sometimes called the Pharos of Alexandria, was built between 280 BC and 247 BC, and was located in Egypt. It's precise location was on the Coastal island of Pharos at Alexandria, Egypt.
