The cost of living was extremely high in Japan following the war and as a result of this, people in the workforce had to work much longer weeks. To help keep their families afloat, many women started working, which changed their social status in Japan. With more and more women in the workforce, they began to gain more political, legal, and social freedoms. With an increase in the amount of women working, roles within the family and housing arrangements had changed, which resulted in a decline in the importance of family, which used to be considered sacred in the Japanese lifestyle. With the importance of family decreasing, young people began making important life choices that were once made by their parents, like who to marry and where to work, on their own.
