The Magnolia Flag was the first official flag of Mississippi. It was the official state flag from 1861 until 1865 and unofficially until 1894. The flag consisted of a white background, a Magnolia tree in the center, a blue field in the upper left hand corner with a white star in the center, and a red border at right hand side of the flag.
The current flag of the State of Mississippi was selected by the school children of Mississippi in 1896
In 1894 a committee was formed to create the state flag. It was a collaborative effort.
Mississippi's state flag is called simply the State Flag of Mississippi.
Every state has a State Flag that represents themselves. The state of New York passed a resolution to adopt their State Flag in 1788.

Perhaps because the voters in 1900 felt a need for something more colorful then a plain white flag bearing the State Seal. In any case it was named the State Flag by a vote to alter its design as an amendment to the State Constitution.

Because in the eyes of Mississippians, that flag represents heritage and an important piece of their state's history that they are proud of.
