African Americans were treated like dogs in 1866. The KKK and other white groups were all around burning their homes and communities. Slaves were still working on plantations and were technically getting paid. Newly freed slaves had to carry identification. Many southerns and northerners used to having slave labor had to start to adjust. Many slaves were sold back into illegal slavery.
