Lord North's policies were significantly much more sympathetic to the plight of the colonists brought on by the extreme taxation from his predecessor, Charles Townshend, in order to pay off the debt from the French and Indian War. His policies repealed all of the previous Townshend taxes, except for the tea tax, which was kept to display English supremacy over the colonies.
