I'm not sure but i think castles were built of of mud and stone but when that didn't work they were built out of wood. When the they found that the wood caught fire they started to build castles out Stone. After a while people destroyed castles using Gun Powder. Then after this the castles lost there usefulness. The Normans introduced the first proper castles, starting with the wooden Motte and Bailey castles to England following their victory at The Battle of Hastings in 1066.
