By laying siege to a castle, attackers could wait until the defenders' food ran out, thereby avoiding any costly attacks against the walls. Sometimes, however, frontal attacks (costly and otherwise) were made with the help of scaling ladders, rams, and siege engines that could hurl stones at the walls and otherwise batter the castle's defenses.
