The ancient Sumerians believed in education. Record keeping was very important to them. They wrote everything down. They wanted their sons to learn how to read and write. Their written language was called cuneiform. Schools were attached to temples. Only boys went to school. Teachers were very strict. Students had to do a perfect job, or they were punished (usually whipped.) In spite of the punishment they quite often received, most students wanted to go to school anyway. Someone who could read and write could always find a good job.
Wealthy children [including middle class families] could have a tutor, often a Greek slave, who would teach the basics - history, arithmetic, poetry, astronomy, etc. There were also fee-charging schools leading to specialized education in speaking and law. The wealthiest could go to Greece to study Philosophy.
For specific trades such as being a scribe or carpenter, they would learn from a practitioner in a relationship we might call an apprenticeship, or simply learn from their parents.
ancient Rome had no system of public education as we understand it today.
Grandfathers of Mesopotamia were in general teachers of children. Also, children would enter an apprenticeship at an early age and learn a trade that way. Most young men of early adulthood were conscripted to military duty or used in the harder tasks such as freemasonry and temple building. If a young man was particularly favored, he was made a eunuch and served in the Temple.
