THE BEGINNING OF GURU - STUDENT RELATIONSHIP IN HINDUISM

This began with the teaching of Vedic meditation. In Hinduism, a Guru was an equivalent of god and not just a teacher. The reason for this was the difficulty and risks associated with Vedic meditation.

The evolution of Hinduism is nothing but simplification of teaching of Vedic meditation.

VEDIC MEDITATION - THE FOUNDATION OF HINDUISM

Hinduism is based on Rig Veda, which in turn is based on Vedic meditation.

Vedic meditation is a set of isometric exercises. In the earliest stage of Hinduism there were no rituals and Vedic meditation was the panacea for all problems.

With no knowledge of the anatomy of the skeletal muscular system and isometric contraction, the Gurus felt that it was practically impossible to teach Vedic meditation to students.

ADVANTAGES OF VEDIC MEDITATION

1. Vedic meditation made it possible to solve all problems of life automatically.

2. It auto corrected life frequently and thus maintained life in immaculate condition and thus gave the best quality of life.

3. It enabled the master of Vedic meditation to understand and control life under all conditions and thus become the master of his fate.

DRAWBACKS OF VEDIC MEDITATION

1. Vedic meditation didn't produce any visible or audible changes. Therefore, it was practically impossible for the Gurus to teach it to the students.

2. Absolute surrender of the student to the Gurus was a must.

3. Practice of Vedic meditation wrongly could devastate the life of the student completely.

4. It made Moksha the most a basic need and thus made life and the society flaccid.

5. Solving of even the smallest problem resulted in total transformation of entire life.

VEDIC MANTRAS AS A MEANS TO TEACH VEDIC MEDITATION

Vedic mantras were written symbolically so that by understanding a Vedic mantra a student could under stand the Vedic meditation behind it.

Recitation of Vedic mantras became popular as it was the only way a Guru could ensure that the student has understood the mantra correctly.

THE DOMINATION OF THE HINDU SYMBOLS

The Gurus felt that the symbols used in Rig Veda gave sufficient benefits and made students disciplined. Moreover, the symbols being in the material world, made the students materialistic, which made Hinduism more attractive. Therefore, the Gurus started teaching Vedas, based on the literal meaning of mantras.

Understanding of the mantra was replaced with rituals, which produced similar effect as that of understanding the Vedic mantra.

THE REPLACEMENT OF SYMBOLS WITH GODS

The symbols like fire, sun, water, etc. produced benefits under one set of conditions only. The Gurus had to find ways of making these symbols work under all conditions. Thus, the symbols were replaced by gods, resembling human beings. Thus, fire was replaced by Agni and later by Brahma. Surya was replaced by his two sons Yama and Shani. Water was replaced by Vishnu.

Thus, the ingenuity of the Gurus and the inability of students to understand Vedic meditation, which they could neither see nor hear, resulted in the evolution of Hindu gods and rituals, which constitute Hinduism of today.
