The first evidence of equines in warfare appears in a Sumerian depiction as draught animals about 2,500 BCE, though it is probable that they were used before that. The Sumerian wagon and chariot animals were onagers (asses). Later pictorial evidence of the mid-2nd Millennium BCE depicts horses pulling war chariots.

Horses used in battle gave soldiers a huge advantage over foot soldiers. They used big, heavy horses that could carry a man wearing armor and protective armor to protect the horses themselves. These horses had special training in combat manuvers and in fact the famous Lippazan Stallion's beautiful "dancing" are really old war manuvers to help their riders defeat their enemies. Horses have been used in military situations through WWII. With the development of cruise missiles and high-tech machinary, horses are no longer used in wars.

Wild horses are not trained, and they usually live in the wild with a herd. On the other hand, tame horses are fully, maturely trained for shows or other activities.
