Mental illness, as we know it was seldom acknowledged in the 1940's unless it became unmanageable. It was a hidden disease. Psychoanalysis ca. Freud and Jung were popular as were frontal lobectomies for the violent. If the client was wealthy and bored they went to a sanitarium for a "rest" and psychoanalysis.

Before the establishment of mental asylums... well you see mental asylums were actually always there, even in the time of the artist of The Scream. if you are referring to earlier times, then in those days mentally disabled people lived in the streets, and they had to fend for themselves if their kids/family members did n't. Doctors did not actually try to find therapy. Remember King Lear ? They usually put patients to sleep... and maybe prescribed herbs of some sort, but naturally enough the sleep and rest did it all :)

In the 1840s, Dorothea Dix investigated the conditions in which mentally ill patients were living. She often found them in prisons, and they were treated like criminals. Dix worked to improve the conditions in which mentally ill patients lived, and she worked to get state governments to build mental hospitals.
Mentally ill or depressed patient?"
Nationally, the policies regarding who's responsibility it was for the mentally ill, and how the mentally ill would be treated, actually began during Jimmy Carter's Administration when he led to the passage of the "Mental Health Systems Act." The passage of this act would place the care of the mentally ill squarely on the shoulders of each state and with this transference of responsibility, changes in policy and treatment began.
Some attributes of a mentally ill person include irrational actions, an inability to communicate, and a lack of social skills. Most people with mental illness can be treated with a variety of medication to reduce or eliminate their symptoms.
