In the second and third centuries, various imaginative Christian traditions grew up about the terrible deaths suffered by each of the apostles, all except the apostle John. The tradition that grew up around John was that the emperor had him boiled in oil, but this was unable to harm him, so John was exiled to Patmos and eventually died from natural causes. However, there is no good reason to believe any of these traditions. It is likely that all of the apostles died naturally, without the Roman authorities showing any interest in them
