The Brewarrina Aboriginal Mission, which opened in 1886, enforced white culture on the Aborigines. As a result, children were made to learn English, and were denied the opportunities to hear Dreamtime stories of their people or be immersed in their own native culture, as it was forbidden for the Aborigines to practise any part of their culture.

He was Australia's former Prime Minister. He changed the way in which aboringinal people were treated. Aboriginal schools were created teaching children about their cultures and lifestyles. A flag was made to recognize their cultures. Programs were created for aboriginals and non aboriginals to learn more about their traditions, languages and history. They were able to adapt and be themselves once again.

The Aboriginal Protection Policy was a policy set up in Australia to help "protect" aboriginals. It was felt that Aboriginals were a dying race in Australia and so they needed to be treated like children. The act of treating them like children is referred to as paternalism. This policy of Protection followed on from Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, it was felt that they had not evolved up to the standard of the white Australians. Under this policy Aboriginals were placed on "reserves" where they were to eat, stay and sleep. They had to gain permission to leave the reserve at any point.
