In large cities, like London or NY , most chamber pot contents were disposed of through the window ( this was a bit unsettling for someone who might be under it). Urine was often collected because it provided salt peter to make gun powder and other things. Urine was also used to process leather, and to help make some dyes in dying wool. So, it was very useful. To keep the urine a pit or container was made in the back of a house and it was picked up once a week by some who had this as a business. Needless to say streets were pretty dirty and stinky with human feces, animal feces, and other things. Every so often this washed into the streams or bays near the city or town. When it rained it was hard to tell mud from the other things and all of this got into the drinking water as well.
It was not fun emptying chamber pots every morning, but someone had to do it.
