The crops have been planted. In a good monsoon year, the crops will grow without irrigation. The irrigation ditches are still there just in case.
Sometime in September the monsoon ends. Irrigation must be used until all crops are ripe.
In winter sometimes cold fronts bring rain. These are not dependable enough to use to grow crops but they do refill reservoirs for irrigation.
