It is known that a male vampire can impregnate a living woman. The child is known as a Dhampir. It has been suggested that the Dhampir is actually the progenitor of the 'vampire race, a ordinary human with something more, a genetic trait that allows him or her to collect life-energy. When the Dhampir dies this ability allows him to perpetuate his existence as a true vampire. It has also been suggested that ability is the result of some sort of viral infection - so that ordinary people can become vampire through close physical contact.
