You were thought to be a witch if you were extremely secretive and lived on your own or if anything strange happened that may have been connected with you. If you were thought to be a witch, there were many types of punishment including hanging and burning (especially if case with treason). Also, to see if you were innocent or not, they would tie you hands together and throw you into a lake. If you floated, you were thought to be guilty, but if you drowned or started drowning, you were believed to be innocent, in which case you would try to be saved. However, many innocent people died when this method was used.

There were several methods used to identify witches in the 17th century. First were body blemishes. Any birthmarks or discolorations could be considered a Devil's mark and get someone tried as a witch. Accused witches were stripped naked, tied and thrown in bodies of water to see if they would float. The relentless pricking of the accused's flesh with torture pins to see if there was a spot any place on the body that was impervious to pain. This spot was considered bewitched and therefore, the accused was a witch.

in the 17th century Witches where treated very poorly , they where normally accused of being a old lady in the woods with either a black cat.they would be hanged , burnt alive or they would be 'dunked' this is where they would tie them up and place them into a lake or river , if they floated they where classed a witch , but if they didn't they wouldn't be a witch , but either way , they would a die . 'Duh' .what where named 'witches' where treated Very badly and didn't deserve to be treated that way.Hope that covers a bit about witches !!
