evil powers
2nd answer: The church didn't want any competition. Witches are not evil. The church wanted absolute power and to do so you need everyone. We didn't want to be told how to worship so we where killed in the name of god.
We witches believe in harm none for karma comes back 3 fold.
No one knows how many people were executed for witch craft. The figure "tens of thousands" is usually given but that's pretty vague.
In a sense, perhaps no "witches" were killed. The crimes that people were tried for were acts like walking through walls, flying, sailing the seas in a sieve, making love to physically manifest demons- things that most rational modern people would have a hard time believing happened (not that we're always right). Neither do most modern historians believe that their was an underground satanic cult practicing at the time.
There were "blessing witches" (AKA white witches, cunning folk), who were part folk healers and part psychics. They considered themselves good Christians and the church authorities considered them no worse than deluded superstitious peasants (under Henry VIII they were allowed by law to dispense medicines). While they weren't directly targeted by the witch trails as the accused, they were often tagged as witnesses because they were the ones people would go to for help if they thought there was a curse on them. Being a witness was a BAD thing. If you didn't come up with a list of your neighbors to accuse you would be tortured till you did.
Because they were outcasted and being a witch was a sin against God. It said in The Bible stay away from witchcraft. And the puritans completely took the bible and God as there lives. So basically being a wich was a sin and sinners were killed.
Witch's were put on unfair trials, they would drop them in water. If they were a witch, they would survive and be burned at the stake. If they were innocent, the would drown!
very rarely were they burned or drowned, or even killed at all. It is a common misconception. Those who were put to death were hung by the neck.
Hanging. And the were no witches in Salem. The accused were completely innocent.
