The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were according to tradition and lore, built by king Nebuchadnezzar II. He reigned from 605 to 562 BC and historical records state he founded the Babylonian Empire and decided to build the Gardens as a gift to his Queen.
However there is no evidence that they ever existed in real life. Archeological surveys and digs found no evidence, and there have been many attempts. Also all ancient accounts of the city of Babylon (In present-day Iraq) do not mention the Gardens.
Therefore they were not built at all, which is a shame because it would have been pretty cool. : )
