From the most eastern point of Australia, Cape Byron in New South Wales, to the most western point of Australia, Steep Point in Western Australia, is a distance of almost 4,000km (2485 miles).

Extending beyond the immediate continent of Australia, and includi its territories, excluding the Antarctic regions, the farthest distance is from Heard & McDonald Islands to the peak of the Cape Peninsula around Somerset, QLD is a distance of about 7,700km.

I got over 4000km direct across Australia and didn't even cross any water. It is from Cape Byron NSW to South Lefroy Bay WA at 4046.63km. That is longer than passing over the water to Steep Point WA or North West Cape WA (Exmouth) or from Cape Howe VIC to North West Cape WA. Even if totally cheating from Moimi Island in PNG but still QLD to Whale Head TAS or Cape Leeuwin WA the Cape Byron to Lefroy Bay direct distance is still further. I love the fact you could walk it without getting your feet wet making it totally legitimate too. Go measure it on Google Maps.
