How will dark hair look with purple highlights when it is not bleached first?

It will just make it look darker. I have really dark hair and I put purple highlights in without bleaching and it just ended up making my hair look even blacker. I could sort of see the purple when I went out in the sun, but I didn't really like the overall appearance.
