I'm not sure if Microsoft Works has a password protect function built in, but WinZip can easily password protect archives. You can protect a a Microsoft Works document by saving it then placing it inside a password protected WinZip archive. WinZip is a shareware application and it's about about $30. There's a 30-day trial version which is free. There's a Pro version which is $50, but the "non-Pro" version has password protect functionality built in, so I see no reason why you'd need to "go Pro". Before shelling out $30 for WinZip, however, I'd see if there were any other file archiving programs with password protect functionality that were free (freeware/FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).

On your desktop right click and choose new folder. Then open the folder and right click in the folder and choose new text document. Open up the word document or open one up and file save. Now right click on the text document and send to compressed (zipped) folder. Drag the neew folder to your desktop and open up the new folder.
