Electricity cannot be transmitted wirelessly if by this we mean without a suitable conductor - a wire, conducting liquid, plasma etc.

However energy can be transmitted using radiation of a wide range of frequencies from radio waves, through microwave, visible light up to X-Rays collectively known as EMF. Obvious examples of these are microwave cookers and laser weapons.

The question probably refers to the practicality of charging, say, your iPad without physical connection to a power source. This has been possible since Nikola Tesla a Serbian inventor in 1890's demonstrated how EMF energy, basically rapily changing magentic forces, can be converted into an electric current by the use of a tuned inductor (a coil of wire and other 'stuff').

Although the effect is perfectly sound in physical terms it is rather inefficient and, for domestic use is only really effective/economical over short distances. Recent developments have improved the efficiency and, most particularly, the size of the EMF sender and receiver to practical levels for use in phones, tablets etc.

Wireless electricity (high voltage) transmission can be done from a Tesla Coil transmitter and Tesla Coil receiver

If you have networking knowledge with good imagination, then This concept can be understood when relating it with wireless data communication between a sender and a receiver... It can also be related with satellite communication (where it can also be related with the communication with the Mars Rover)... Wireless communication as well as transistors was born from with reference to his patents/works...

What factors dictate the transmission range of 802.11x?

cable, and the rounter --Like Man-- 802.11 is wireless so the cable has nothing to do with the transmission range. Some factors that do dictate the transmission range are the placement of the wireless device giving a signal and also the distance of the wireless device to your device.
