because it takes longer for soldiers to get up so that archers could shoot them and prevent them from climbing up!
very carefully
To defend their territory. and impose a point of power.
If I had to defend a castle then I would either build the walls stronger so catapults or other modern day objects Can not get through the Walls of the castle or make the castle higher so the stones or other objects cant get over the Wall's.
I would make a moat around the castle so that sappers cannot mine unless they cross the moat.
all the soldiers and men who helped to defend the castle would live in the bailey as well as the king/queen.
Slaves, boose and weapons.
If they had a defensive wall (castle wall) they would most likely have archers. The archers would then shot the enemy if they would try to attack the castle. Does that answer you're question?
It's where the king/queen stays. Also, if a country is under attack, then the king or queen would stay in the castle, and ontop of the castles there would be archers etc. the castle would be there to defend the country i guess.
yes they are one of the many contributing factors that in which protect a castle. another thing castles do is that they where usually built on very high elevations so it would be a lot of effort for the enemy to go to the castle and it would help give the castle more time to be prepared to defend it's self and they would have the advantage .
While history is vague as to the exact date of the first spiral staircase,it is widely accepted that spiral staircases appeared in the middle ages as a defensive structure inside castle walls. The concept was that soldiers would man the staircase inside the tower wall, and shoot downward at any intruders affording them a distinct advantge.Great question!
It did have a staircase and there was a dome as well. When the Britannic was sinking the water would be rising up the staircase and when the ship rolled over the dome would of imploded.
