The same element can have different half-lives, for different isotopes. You can find a list at the Wikipedia article "List of radioactive isotopes by half-life". This list is NOT complete; a complete list would have about 3000 nuclides (that is, isotopes).

The fact that it allows us the breath is a big one. There are also other reasons like it's molecular structure and it's position on the Periodic Table. Oxygen was one of the first elements on the planet, which suggests organice life. This alone makes Oxygen a a fundamental part of our lives. It holds the value of life, and GIVES us life. Without it, we would be dead.
