How was the American community affected when the US prohibition of alcohol was lifted? Prohibition of drugs consistently causes more problems than it solves, especially of a drug as "soft" as cannabis.
Realistically speaking, for cannabis to have been legalized, the social and moral attitude toward cannabis would have to have openly shifted toward tolerance, if not acceptance. That said, the public outcry toward the action would be minimal.
The tax revenue brought by the legitimate sale of cannabis would, if decided upon by the government, increase the budgets of social improvement programs. In the case of the United States, any additional revenue, especially of such a large magnitude, would be very helpful in the solving of the nation's current economic crisis.
By bringing the sale of cannabis to the private sector, the black market for the drug would also be eliminated, decreasing gang-related violence. Seen in recent years as a product, rather than a justification of the war against cannabis, the "Gateway theory" would fall apart, decreasing the use of "harder" drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin.
Legalization of cannabis in the United States would also be a tremendous relief to the prison system which is currently suffering from a incomprehensible amount of overcrowding due to a popular judicial trend of imprisoning individuals on possession of cannabis alone.
However, we cannot overlook the negative effects of legalization. A period of reckless use can always be expected when a prohibition is lifted; although not long, it would take some time for society to adjust to legal cannabis. However, in light of the safety of the drug in relation to other "acceptable" recreational drugs such as alcohol, cigarettes, and caffeine, as well as its frequent use among a large portion of the population, it is safe to assume that the damage caused by the period of liberation could comfortably be called "a cultural disturbance".
We cannot turn a blind eye on the jobs that would be lost as a result of legalization. Many individuals currently profit from the criminality of cannabis; the Drug Enforcement Agency of the US currently has a $2,602,000,000 budget, the vast majority of which is spent battling cannabis trade and use. Countless lawyers would face a sharp drop-off in clientele. The industry that would be hardest hit by legalization would be the private prison business which owes its very existence to the criminal status of cannabis.

If you live in a state that has legalized marijuana for medical purposes then you need to go to www.weedtracker.com and find a doctor that can write you a recommendation for you. In California at least this is a very common and easy thing to do. The cost is around $100 for a year's recommendation. If you don't live in a state that has legalized marijuana for medical use you should 1) move 2) get it legalized in your state 3) try to start your own "study trial" program. Good luck getting a permit from the DEA though.
