It is possible to govern a democracy without political parties; however, political parties often play a key role in organizing political activity and providing structure to the democratic process. Without political parties, decision-making and representation may become more decentralized and potentially less effective.
The goal of political parties is to form and institute social and economic changes in a given nation. The wider there is of citizen participation in political parties should bring forth a better understanding how the political process can work. Also of course by being a member of a political party a person becomes aware of how local, state, and the federal government operates. It should also be a way for citizens to vote for candidates and to study how a democratic nation operates, and without violence.
Martin Van Buren favored reviving political parties because he believed without political parties there would be no debate over important issues. He felt perfect agreement would leave important issues such as slavery alone without any hope of ever ending it.
Political parties play a crucial role in modern democracies by representing diverse interests and values, facilitating the formation of government, and holding leaders accountable. They provide structure and organization to the political process, mobilize voters, and offer a platform for citizens to participate in political decision-making. Without political parties, it would be difficult to sustain the functioning and stability of democratic systems.
Political parties in democratic nations are said to be slowing down their governments, in some cases based purely on "party politics". In most cases however, the democratic process is better served when government actions are examined by various republic or parliamentary committees and the process of having executive branch appointees be approved by a US Senate as example or by some other approval system in other governments. Political parties are essential in governments in order that executive polices are not "rammed" through and carried out without proper review. This is what political parties do in that regard. One of the first goals of a potential dictator is to eliminate all parties except one, the party of the "dictator". In Imperial Japan and in Nazi Germany, for example, "things" moved rather quickly in government as no opposition parties existed. In summation, political parties slow down governments by reviewing, and debating government actions or plans for actions. In the view of many historians and political scientists, the "slowing down" is a virtue.
