the buyers and sellers of illegal goods do not pay taxes and so the government loses revenue and is less able to provide for things like education, health, housing etc. another factor is the fact that legal businesses lose market share which means they lose revenue and this may lead to job losses. unemployed people may resort to crime and you have the beginning of a viscious circle.
