He was responsible for the deaths of large numbers of first world war British soldiers. My great grandmother was fined for calling him a 'BASTARD' during the war after losing three sons.

ANSWER: Churchill was a hero for resisting Nazi Germany when other British politicians were willing to make peace, but the same man enthusiastically endorsed the use of poison gas against Arab tribes, and sent the particularly murderous "Black and Tans" to Ireland to try to stave off Irish independence through a series of massacres and assassinations, refusing to rein in the force even when his wife complained about the atrocities.

__

Lord Kitchener set up the camps, not Churchill. Churchill was a war correspondent during the Boer War, not a politician or ranking officer with the power to create the camps. His legacy is troubling to many. He is both a hero and an anti-hero because of his actions outside of WW2.

Why was Winston Churchill sent to jail?

Churchill went to South Africa to cover the Boer War as a journalist. The war had just broken out between Britain and the Boers. He was captured by the Boers and imprisoned. He managed to escape from prison and took the railroad into Portuguese East Africa. This feat made him a national hero. As far as I know, this was the only time he was "in jail".
