This greatly depends on how you define a Nation verus city states\ tribes \ regions. The oldest conventional "Nation" as most people would define nation as would be China. After that depending on continent you could say Mayans, Aztecs, Rome, Etheopia, Egypt, and ancient Babalyon would be some of the earliest "Nations" as most would recognize but depending on how you define a "Nation" your milage may vary.

Define America? You mean USA or the whole continent? USA is awesome. Been there twice and loved it. The continent of America is cool. I prefer the north over the south.
I presume you mean 'continents'. Like the number of oceans or seas, it depends on how you define a continent. I initially learned that there were 5 continents, but that lumps North and South America together as one continent; many people would count them separately, and would also count Antarctica, so that makes at least 7.
