The NVA was an extremely aggressive army. They rolled into South Vietnam with conventional forces; tanks and infantry. No army on earth had been bombed the way the NVA had been bombed (relentlessly) by B-52 bombers. That toughed their cadre (because that's all they had left after such bombing). Any army that's tough enough to with-stand YEARS of B-52 bombing, would find it a "cake walk" (easy) when it came to invading South Vietnam (with no further B52 bombings). And they did...
The Vietnam War sounds like it should've been called a civil war, but when you look up the term "civil war" in the dictionary you will find that a "civil war" is a war fought AGAINST ITSELF. The Vietnam War was not fought against itself; it was fought between two separate nations...from day one (1954). A North and a South Vietnam...those are two different countries. The Northern Army was called the NVA (North Vietnamese Army); their southern allies were called the VC (Viet Cong). The Southern Army, the good guys, the ones the US was helping, was called the ARVN (Army Republic of South Vietnam). When fighting them, over the radio, we would say, "November-Victor-Alpha" or "Victor Charlie." This would tell our higher headquarters what kind of support we would need to destroy them; artillery, jets, attack helos, etc.
Recommend that you subscribe, or obtain a copy of, "VIETNAM" magazine, which was founded by US Army Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr. (1932-1999) during the late 1970's, COL Summers was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. Material that you are interested in are often advertised in that magazine.

Not as a soldier. You MIGHT be able to find employment as a DoD civilian, but it'll disqualify you from soldiering.
