While you cannot technically 'see' a black hole, you can see the accretion disk which forms around it.
The accretion disk is a large amount of matter that has collected around the mass (black hole) and orbits the mass VERY fast. Picture looking down the drain when your sink is running...the water swirls around the drain before going down, but you cannot see down the drain itself. (Unless you had a flash light)
