While a seizure is in progress, it is important NOT to restrain the person or place anything in his or her mouth. The most important thing is to prevent injury, and you may want to place a cushion or pillow under the person's head if one is available.
If any seizure goes on for five minutes or longer, call 911 and get emergency help.
Immediately after the seizure, make sure the person is oriented (knows who and where she is), and has no injuries. Seek help or use first aid for any injuries sustained, as appropriate. Seek immediate medical attention if the person remains disoriented.
In general, if you are charged with the care of an epileptic (child or dependent adult), make sure the person is getting proper medical treatment and is taking her prescribed medications.
If the seizures are frequent, you may want to pad the sharp edges of furniture around the house, to help prevent injury, but most people don't find this to be necessary. Most forms of epilepsy can be well-controlled by prescription medication.
