Using kilometers to measure a whale is totally pointless. Blue whales typically grow to 85ft but they can grow to 100ft. Let take 100ft, convert that to km is 0.03048 kilometers. Pointless to measure a whale in km.

There is 2 ways. One being captured and manual measurement, this means trapping a whale and measure it with a tap measure of sort. Another way is taking photos of the whale in a water and compare length of whale to the water in photo.

There were 2 ways a whale was measured. One way is to physically measure by capturing it and measuring it. Another common way is to take a aerial photo of it and measure it by scaling it to the length of area that it was taken.

This does depend on species of whale. Largest species is blue whales that average measure 85 feet which is a good unit. Smallest species is dwarf sperm whale which a good unit of measurement would be meters around 3 meters.
