connect a dc voltmeter to the battery and read the voltage. Then rev the engine to 3000RPM and note the voltage. Voltage should not be above 14.8V at any time. If voltage is above 14.8 volts it should cut out at 15.2 when computer senses over volt condition. If this occurs one of the most common problem is high restiance in SENSE wire [RED of 3 wire connector]. The fix... Remove the negative battery cable, then.. Disconnect BLACK 3 wire connector from alternator, then... Create a permanant jumper wire by attaching a 14-16GA wire from B+ terminal of Alternator to RED sense wire of 3 wire connector. Use an eyelet connector to B+ terminal and spread insulation of RED wire near connector with autostrippers then pierce wire with test lamp probe making a hole in the wire. Then strip back about 1.5" of the jumper wire and thread through the hole and wrap around wire tightly. Solder in place with rosin core solder [do not use acid core solder] then cover with black tape and reinstall connector and attach eyelet to B+ terminal. This bypasses the fused SENSE circuit and will solve the problem and will not harm the system. Ford may have been aware of this issue as the SENSE circuit fuse in the Battery Junction Box (BJB) has been upgraded from 7.5Amp to 15Amp as schematics show the 7.5Amp fuse although the vehicles I have experienced had a sticker on inside of the cover of the BJB. I presume the fuse was upgraded and the wire could not handle the additional current the circuit required. Hope this helps, Andrew
I can tell you that on a 2000 mercury cougar it is a fuse on the positive cable between the battery and the alternator
The charging system is the alternator which is on and functioning anytime the engine is running. If not, then you have a problem with the alternator.
usually that the battery isn't taking a charge. have the alternator checked, many shops will test the charging system for free
It should be the same as for a 2002 Mercury Cougar which is answered in WikiAnswer under the Question; " How to remove alternator from a 2002 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6." The 2000 Cougar may be different by having an upper alternator BOLT. If it does, and you can't lift the bolt out (after fully loosening the bolt), lower the alternator and you can, then, lift the bolt out. When you begin to install the alternator (attach the power wire, and the wire connector) place the BOLT in the upper hole in the alternator, and THEN, raise the alternator to install.
wires, connecters, terminals
where is the anti theft located on a 2000 mercury cougar
On a 2000 Mercury Cougar : No , only the automatic transaxle ( transmission ) has a dipstick
aerodnamics are such that there isn't much airflow past the alternator and high loads cause them to overheat
For a 2000 Mercury Cougar : The tank holds ( 15.4 US. gallons )
On a 2000 Mercury Cougar : The brake fluid reservoir is also the clutch fluid reservoir
Of Course
If the "Charging system light" is solid red for a while, then the car no moovy. Seriously though, the alternators in these things go fast and hard, one minute they can be fine, the next dead. Sort of gives you an appreciation for our own mortality huh?
