To discern means to perceive or recognize.

The Scripture calls it the 'fruit' (gift) of God's Spirit. It is not plural as each (9) is an aspect of the 'fruit' listed in Galatians 5:22-23 as being simply a 'reflection' of God's character being reproduced by His Spirit in true followers.

Each aspect in the newly repentant and baptized follower of Christ is a reflection of the life of Christ on Earth - He is the true believers' perfect example. Each is important for the spiritual growth of believers.

Love - is exactly what God is (1 John 4:8) and is the foundation of all followers who are to mimic Christ and all His ways. It transforms our character as Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. And we are not just to love those who love us, but rather we are to love all so we may be sons/daughters of our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:43-46). The Scripture calls this love a debt we will always owe, no matter how much 'good' we do (Romans 13:8-9). Few reflect this character and no one can without God's Spirit in us guiding our lives.

The spiritual fruit of joy is in all who truly believe. This was reflected by King David in Psalm 5:11-12, Paul and Peter in Philippians 1:3-4; 1 Peter 4:12-13, respectively) and many other Scriptures by many others.

True believers are to seek peace with all - especially within themselves (Matthew 5:9, Romans 10:15, James 3:17-18 to mention a few).

Patience as God has not revealed all of His plan for mankind but we have His promises (2 Peter 3:13-15, Acts 1:6-7, James 5:7-8, etals).

Kindness should also be reflected in a true believers character as God has pardon us, we should also pardon all (Nehemiah 9:7; Ephesians 4:32).

We should emulate goodness as the earth is full of goodness of the Lord (Psalm 33:5; 107:8; 2 Peter 1:5).

Faith is an essential fruit of the Spirit (Luke 16:10-12; 19:17, Revelation 17:14).

Gentleness is also a part of the true believers character as Christ was gentle (Matthew 11:29; 2 Timothy 2:24).

And self-control, something sorely lacking today (see Acts 24:24-25; Romans 8:3-4; 7:14-17).

The Apostle Peter summarizes these 'spiritual essentials'of a true believer in 2 Peter 1:5-11 for your reading pleasure.

ANSWER:

The answer above is on the FRUITS of the spirit... They are NOT the same as the GIFTS of the spirit...

The Gifts of the Spirit serve to empower the church, the fruits are a result of a holy, sanctified life in and through God.

The Gifts of the Spirit are found listed in Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

The Gifts that Paul list are:

1. Word of wisdom

2. Word of knowledge

3. Faith

4. Healing

5. Working of miracles

6. Prophecy

7. Discerning of spirits

8. Tongues

Should you receive the 7 gifts of the holy spirit?

They are the gifts listed in Romans 7 and they are granted to believers by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Each believer has one gift given to him to use for the glory of God. First Corinthians 12 is a list of gifts that are manifestations of the Holy Spirit and a believer may receive the work of the Spirit in any one of those areas at different times but they are not "possessed" by the believer like the gifts in Romans 12. Then you have the office gifts of the Holy Spirit given to the church in Ephesians 4.
