Hows a metric ruler used

i come form New Zealand and we use metric and I'm guessing we use it just like an imperial one but with metric units on it instead of imperial ones. Like with cm,mm etc instead of inches,feet etc.

To read the length you add the whole number of centimeters to the decimal number of centimeters. Therefore, the length would be X.Y centimeters in length. The short hand notation for centimeters is cm.
