Hypothetically If there was perfect chain that had no weak links and was only able to hold 1000 pounds and a weight was added til the point where the chain broke how would it know where to break?

The topmost link would break, as it needs to hold the weight of the weight itself plus all the chain links below it. Thus this topmost link reaches the 1000-pound limit before all the others.
