ok, so pretty much they put silver crowns or caps on your back top and bottom teeth. then attached to those are screws which are hooked onto metal bars connecting the top and bottom teeth together. it messes up your bite for a week or so. then between 6 months and a years it will come off. what it does in move your bottom jaw forward so that your profile is straight and your teeth meet up better. its really annoying when you get your herbst tightened because they twist the screws and your bite gets messed up again. your teeth don't meet and it gets really annoying. so ya.
A herbst appliance is usually for an overbite or something like it. The orthodontist will cement the crowns on a few of your teeth,and then you will feel something at the roof of your mouth. You usually do not get the legs put on for about 4 weeks. After that, the appliance with the legs stays on for about 11-12 months. It is annoying, but it does fix the overbite if you have one. If you open your mouth too wide, the rods may come out of the sleeves. All you have to do is get the sleeve,open your mouth wide, and stick it back in there. Brushing teeth is not very easy, but you get used to it. I hope this helps,and good luck.

i have the herbst appliance, and i would most definatley NOT recommend it. my cheeks have gotten very large from it, and it is very painful. to answer your question, YES, the herbst does change your face.

The herbst appliance is used to make your jaw move forward.you will realize that you have much more saliva in your mouth, adn you talk funny. Also, it will be hard to eat. I recommend eating ice cream, pudding, milkshates, applesauce, mac and cheese, jello. More of the soft squishy foods.Your orthondantist should give you special floss and a toothbrush. you put the floss in between the herbst appliance and your teeth, and the tooth burush is designed to go around the herbst appliance.The herbst appliance does not hurt at all. You may experience some pain from the metal pieces sticking into your cheaks, but the orthondianst will give you some wax for that. You put the wax around the area of the appliance that hurst you. If something else bothers you, take ibrophen. When you get the herbst, you CAN NOT,i repeat CAN NOT eat sticky foods or hard foods. Sticky foods can dammage the herbst and it can take up to 2 years insted of 9 months for your herst to be in you mouth. hard foods and sticks foods can pull the sement out of your teath, which means, you herbst will move around, and it will be very annoyine. Somw people think that theres nothing wrong with eating foods like apples, carrots, gum, and stuff like that. But you know, your parent and/or gaurdian has to pay about 200-400$ more for a new apliance (estamated) if your herbst breaks from eating wrong foods.Your orthondianst should go over all the things you should not do. the herbst appliance is very useful. And you know what. Your just one step away from getting braces!!!

i don't know but i do know that a herbst appliance pulls out your lower jaw to fix overbite a advanc sync appliance is a newer less bulky version but it doesn't work as well.

You are able to eat Ice cream, like out of a container, but stay away from frozen treats like Popsicles. They can freeze the cement that is holding the Herbst Appliance and it can crack it. The herbst appliance is used to move your bottom jaw forward and your top jaw back. I just got mine a few days ago and it HURTS! Like its the most painful thing and you can have a herbst appliance on while having braces on too! I got braces on and my herbst on at about the same time. With a herbst, you have these like two pieces of metal that go around the tops of your teeth and they stick into your gums and hurt. They hurt because the dentist has to stick the metal part into your gum and cement the metal onto your teeth. Then you have a metal bar that goes across your cheek and connects to the lower part of your teeth with the metal part around it. And that is pretty much what the herbst appliance is and what it does to your mouth. Hope this helps! :)
