Sounds like you dog has suffered some previous abuse. You need to gain the dogs trust that you are not going to hurt him. Talk calmly in a non threatening manor while working with him/her on the various situations that prompt the growling. Let the dog know that you are the boss, not him. Praise the dog when the behavior is altered and reinforce the good results continuously. These behaviors are usually because the dog feels you are in competition with him or that a previous memory of the action was hurtful. Is he food agressive? If so try feeding him/her one kibble at a time, making the dog wait and make the connection that you are the provider of food not a competitor.
