I am a first time bird owner can someone write me a list of do's and dont's so i don't harm the bird?

It is extremely important to do loads of research about the pet you are considering before you buy them. This will usually ensure you don't hurt/kill the bird somehow, and makes you feel more confident. Most books regarding pet birds will give you tips to owning your new bird/ will include useful information of what not to do with your bird. I also highly recommend reading up on your bird's species and talking to your local exotic pet veterinarian(s)- they can definitely help you with caring for your new pet.
Here is a list of the basics (which I'm sure other contributors will add to overtime):
Do's:
- Regular feeding, regular maintanence of your bird's cage
- spending a lot of time with your new pet
- always keeping an eye on your bird
- regular wing clippings
- regular nail clippings
- keeping your pet out of harms way (i.e. cats, dogs, boiling pots,)
- keeping poisonous plants out of reach of your pet bird
- paying attention to your bird's health condition (looking for signs of illness)
- feeding your bird a balanced diet of not just seeds!
- giving your birds lots of toys to play with
Don't's:
- ignoring your bird
- letting problem behaviors develop without any attempt to fix them
- not clipping their wings
- squeezing him/her rough handling
- failing to trim their nails
- failure to have them checked out by a liscensed vetrinarian
- ignoring signs of illness
- neglecting your bird
- feeding a diet of only seeds
- feeding your pet poisonous foods such as chocolate or avocados
