Why is your parakeet sleepy?

I can't tell if this is a dumb question or if you worded it wrong. Anyway, generally they need 12 hours of sleep a day. Some of this they do during the day (like when no one is home) and at night. Make sure you parakeet is getting enough sleep at night.

Is it all right to use a bird cage for a rat?

Using A Bird Cage For A Rat:
  • Absolutley! Rats like to climb. You can make a playground through the bid cage with rope, cardboard, and really anything else. You rats would love it!
  • A rat can be put into a bird cage as long as the cage has been properly modified to suit a rat.
  • No you shouldn't put a rat in a bird cage because birds have different surroundings then rats and they need different homes.
  • If the cage is big enough, and the bottom is not wire... then sure. It doesn't really matter what species the cage is labeled for, so long as it meets your animal's housing requirements. I've kept rats in bird cages.
  • Yes. As long as the wire is close enough together so the rat can't get stuck and make sure all doors are very secure. If the bottom of the cage is plastic keep a close eye on it because they can chew a hole. Rats are very intelligent and can figure out how to escape easily.
  • There are pros and cons: only if the cage has a big enough floor space and No because if they climb to the top of the cage and fall off it's a long way to fall and the rat could hurt itself. It might get it's head stuck in the wire. If you don't put soft bedding (newspaper and wood shavings) on the floor the rat/mouse's feet might fall through the floor and the wire under their feet is just uncomfortable. It doesn't cost much more to buy a rat cage.
  • Yes, there are plenty of good bird cages that you can modify by adding levels and hammocks, you can basically pack it full of toys. I had a hard time deciding to get a rat cage or a bird cage. Just remove the wire bottom.
  • Yes, but make sure that the on the bottom of the cage there is no way your rat friend can get his foot (or any other body part) stuck and you can buy little platforms that will connect to the side of a cage and hammocks for ferrets or other small animals will create a cozy environment and if your rat is small enough for a house if you take an empty tissue box and take off all the plastic from the top then that would work too my rats loved it.
  • Yes you can put a rat in a bird cage as long as all the doors are secure and it cant get out or stuck through the bars. The rat will enjoy playing and climbing on the toys and bars in the cage I know my rat would!
  • I have a pet rat and she lives in a bird cage that i modified because rat cages are too expensive and many deals include a rat which i didnt need. My rat loves her cage and acts like any other normal rat.
  • My rats also live in a bird cage that has been modified. Bird cages are also much cheaper than rat cages.

  • yes, just make sure that the bottom is not wire, there is not enough space between the bars so that the rat can escape, and there is enough space.

Can you house 2 male zebra finches together?

you can but they may fight and seriously injure each other or one may be picked on by the other some more serious results of bullying are broken jaws and the bullied finch may pluck its feathers out ect. i would advise housing two females instead although they may not look as good they will get along better than two malezs

I have two male zebra finches that have been together for a long time and they are best friends. They occasionally fight, but they make up quickly and they have neever hurt each other.

Parakeets (Budgerigars)

What is a parakeet's cere?

It's the little colored band above their beak with the two little holes in it. You can tell a male and a female apart by the color of the cere once the birds are older. The cere will be blue if it is a boy and pinkish brown if it is a girl. The colors will change often when they are under 6 months old, but when they are about that age the color will settle. A cere is the nose

How to tell a parakeet's gender?

i have always known it to be the color of the band right above the beak,,: if it is blue color it is a male and if it is a pinkish color it is a girl

The band can also be a purple color in which case is a male, or a brown or whit color which is a female. I have two parakeets.

How many eggs does a parakeet lay?

On an average, they can lay 3-5, but my own parakeet just laid her 8th egg. I'm planning to empty her cozy nesting cotton, that I had put for her when she started laying. She found it too comfortable and is on a egg-laying spree.
They only lay one egg at a time . Then they keep laying them .
between 6 to 9
Normally they can have up to 3-8 eggs.

What type of paint should you use on a pet bird cage?

Ideally you shouldn't paint it at all - lots of paints contain chemicals that are toxic to birds. You're better off buying a cage that is already painted using the powder-coating technique or getting a stainless steel cage that doesn't need painted. Make sure you get your cage from a reputable bird supply company because a cage with toxic materials or spaces where wings and feet can get caught is very bad for your bird.

Can you raise a bird to live outdoors and simply live around the area you live in ie an apartment complex so that you still have a pet?

No, once they are outside they will revert back to their wild behavior. Being raised by humans would mean that they don't have the skills to survive as a wild bird, but they will try and probably won't make it. If their species is not native to your area, they could freeze or starve in winter. This is not a good idea.

How do you move a bird's nest?

If it is a wild's bird nest that is being used by a bird family, I would just leave it alone until the eggs hatch and the babies have left it. If it is a pet bird's nest, do the same thing.

Can you move a birds nest with chicks in it?

I wouldn't. If the nest is moved, and with human scent on it, the mother bird will usually abandon it. Leave it be until the baby birds are kicked out to fly on their own. Then it can be removed.

Cage birds laying eggs what to do with eggs?

if you don't want chicks hard boil the eggs and give them back to them or simply take the nest off them and if you do want chicks take 2 nests off the pair and then take the nest strait away from them if you do want chicks and they have a nest when they lay the next nest u will ave to separate the chicks from the parents because when they lay the next nest they will literally beat the first chicks to death.
