North Vietnam.
There was no "Vietnam" during the Vietnam War. Communist NORTH Vietnam was attacking non-communist SOUTH Vietnam, and the US was trying to drive the communists out of South Vietnam...trying to stop communist aggression. It's called the Vietnam War because it's a lot easier to say, and less confusing...than to say "South Vietnam War" or "North Vietnam War", so some people go so far as to say the war in Southeast Asia instead.
During the Cold War, the US fought with Vietnam because of Communism
USA GEN Paul Harkins was the first commander in Vietnam, he had served on GEN Patton's staff during WWII. Westmoreland was the second commander replacing Harkins in '64; Westmoreland was also a WWII veteran serving with 9th ID as a COL. Westmoreland was relieved in '69 by GEN Abrams, also a WWII vet, he had served under GEN Patton also, as a Tank Battalion Commander. Vietnam was fought by WWII leaders; which explains why so much firepower was consumed searching for and trying to destroy the enemy.
They were called peace negotiations; and the US simply wanted the North Vietnamese to pull their troops out of SOUTH Vietnam and quit trying to take it over.
The song was popular during the time when many US troops were returning home from the war in Vietnam. The song was actually about a criminal, having served his sentence, returning to society and trying to find out what his standing in society might be. However, with the turmoil surrounding the Vietnam war, our servicemen and servicewomen found themselves in a similar situation.

Defending South Vietnam against Communist aggression from North Vietnam.
They were called peace talks (peace negotiations). The US simply wanted Hanoi to pull their troops out of SOUTH Vietnam and quit trying to conquer the place.

I'm just trying to find some info so just give it to me, NOW!!!there were 9 million US soldiers draftedI am not sure about those answers, but according to the History Channel:"2/3 of the men who served in Vietnam were volunteers. 2/3 of the men who served in World War II were drafted. [Westmoreland] Approximately 70% of those killed were volunteers. [McCaffrey] Many men volunteered for the draft so even some of the draftees were actually volunteers."To find out more: http://www.vhfcn.org/stats.htm
