I am trying to pair a new wireless mac keyboard after I enter the passcode it says there was an error and couldn't be paired any ideas?

Keep trying. As an Apple tech I can tell you they can be very stubborn.
If all else fails, tell it to use a custom number, and try the following codes:
1234
123456
12345678
0
If none work after two tries EACH, call Apple. You may need advanced troubleshooting such as a PRAM clear, SMC reset, or even have a defective keyboard or computer. They can help you out better.
