Rabbits don't have menstrual periods so the blood can't be that. Check your rabbit all over for any cuts, and if you find one and the cut is raw, provide first aid (see below). If not, it might just be from your toe. But if you were never standing in your rabbit's cage, it couldn't be from your toe: blood doesn't travel around on its own.

First Aid

Some people say to use any antiseptic cream or powder, but according to Dana Krempels, PhD and long-time rabbit caregiver, the best topical antiseptic for a rabbit cut is watered-down povidone iodine (Betadine). Other kinds of antiseptics can be very painful for the rabbit, or they might make the problem worse. If your rabbit has a cut, you should flush the wound with watered-down Betadine (watered-down to an iced tea colour), then cover the wound with a non-stick pad secured with a self-adhesive wrap (don't let the wrap touch the wound, because it will stick), and then get the rabbit to a vet because even the smallest cut can lead to a huge abscess; also, rabbit skin is surprisingly stretchy and a small cut can quickly stretch into something huge, so it should be seen by a professional in case it needs proper disinfecting and stitches.

If the blood is coming from a torn nail, you don't necessarily need to see the vet right away: just flush the wound, and keep an eye on how the nail grows back. If the toe becomes swollen and red, or if there's puss, or if there's anything unusual about the area, bring the rabbit to the vet. If the nail grows back fine, mention it to the vet at your next regular check-up so the vet can examine it closely. In the future, clip your rabbit's nails regularly. Rabbits shouldn't be kept on wire grating because it can lead to torn nails (and sore hocks).

Do rabbits bleed?

Rabbits do not bleed naturally. Rabbits do not menstruate like people, so any blood should be a cause for concern. Depending on where your rabbit is bleeding from, this could be a very serious problem. Rabbits can break toenails and bleed from them, and that is not such a worry. However, if your bunny is bleeding from it's mouth, nose, ears or genitals or an open wound, then you should take it to a vet immediatly, as it could be very sick or hurt.

If my rabbit is bleeding could she be having a miscarriage?

Yes, rabbits can miscarry. You need to take your rabbit to a vet as soon as possible to make sure there are not kits left stuck inside and to make sure she is ok.

Can menses occur in rabbits?

No, rabbits do not have menses (aka menstruation, period, etc.). There is no normal or healthy reason for rabbits to bleed from their genitalia. If your rabbit is bleeding from her genitalia, this is a sign of serious illness: it could be a urinary infection, ovarian cancer, or something else. Your rabbit-savvy vet should examine the rabbit as soon as possible so they can determine what's wrong and treat the rabbit. If you notice your rabbit is bleeding, carefully observe its behaviour and health signs until the time of the vet appointment; if the rabbit shows other signs of ill-health, bump up the appointment; if the situation turns into an emergency, bring the rabbit in immediately -- if the rabbit vet isn't open, bring the rabbit to a 24/7 emergency vet immediately. See the related questions below for details.Red-coloured urine doesn't necessarily mean the rabbit is bleeding. Rabbit urine can range in colour depending on what it's eaten recently, if the rabbit's under stress, if the rabbit's dehydrated, the weather, etc. If you're concerned the rabbit may be bleeding, replace the litter material with a white towel. After the rabbit's peed on it, if you notice reddish blotches or splotches in the wet areas, that's blood; but if the reddish colour is spread out evenly everywhere it's wet, that's not blood, just coloured urine. If your rabbit has brightly coloured urine, it could be perfectly fine, but just to be sure: observe the rabbit's behaviour and health signs closely for the next few days (see related question below for details). Make sure the rabbit has access to fresh water all the time. (Replace water daily, and clean the containers. If you think the rabbit isn't drinking much, offer a bowl and a bottle -- some rabbits have a strong preference. If still your rabbit isn't drinking much, talk to your vet about spiking the water with pure apple juice -- this is safe for some rabbits, but not all rabbits.) Make sure the rabbit isn't living in a high-stress situation (which could lead to serious health problems in the long-run. Read up on how to care for rabbits and how to minimize their stress. See related questions below for details.)

Can rabbits have a miscarriage?

It could have been a couple of things. She could of had a false pregnancy. Rabbits will sometimes think they are pregnant. My rabbit did this once even though she has never been around a male. She could of absorbed her litter. When rabbits are under stress they will absorb their litters in to their body. Did you breed the rabbit on purpose? If you are then you should stop. You obviously don't know what you are doing since you don't even know if a rabbit can have a miscarriage.
