After doing some research on this, I've come to the conclusion that swollen and painful toes could very well be linked to Raynaud's Disease and often are. Of course, as with all serious medical issues, you really should see your physician just to make sure.
The appearance of painful and swollen lymph nodes is another reason for consulting a doctor.
