I have Windows 7 OS. I uninstalled Java when the advisory was issued but that was the last I've heard -- What effect does that have on browsers and other programs and am I just as well off without it?

You may not run Java programs like online banks, games etc.
(new technology might be clsoe to take over in near future HTML5)
