I have a 1978 1600 Forester Rebel boat. The Etec I want is 85 lbs more than the 1979 115 Johnson I currently have. Can I put a 115 HO Etec on the back with 12 gallon gas tank and a battery?

1978 was a long time ago and I bet the transom is soft. I had a 1974 Sidewinder that looks similar to the Forester Rebel (which is what brought me to this site). My sidewinder was garage kept most of its life, and its transom went soft in 1998 at the age of 24. Be sure and check yours out. The extra 85 pounds could take out the back of the boat and leave you swimming!!! Hope this helps.
