it may be the o2 scensor
While driving my cavalier will shift into high gear for at least a couple of minutes. Shifting gears,giving it gas does not help. Any suggestions?

There's a small oil filter that gets blocked up. It needs a clean. Sorry I can't be more specific but that's what my mechanic indicated when this was happening to my '91 cavalier. . Charlie As Above, I remember a filter getting blocked in the air filter unit, But: Given the age of Cavalier's these day, it's also quite possible that the engine is just "worn out". IE the bores in the block and the rings on the pistons have worn past the point they were designed to, and now combustion gasses are getting into the crank-case, and over pressurising it, causing the problem you have.

I had the same problem with my areo star van and found out that it was the throttle position sensor that was causing the problem. Once changed, it was back to normal driving with no serging and jumping like a rodeo bronk..
