Why would a car stall when idling at a stop light?

If the car runs fine while driving and cuts off ONLY when you are idling (foot completely off the gas pedal and RPM's at idle speed) then your idle air control valve my need adjusting or need to be replaced, or idle air passage make have been blocked off by excessive carbon build-up. If build-up is the problem, a good removal and cleaning will do the trick or an off the shelf spray cleaner may get the job done as well.

Could also be clogged fuel injection system. Try a fuel treatment with a full tank of gas.if a older model GM front wheel drive it could be the lock-up solenoid on the transmission. or it could be a stopped up catalytic converter on about any make and model.

First thing id do is check and change the fuel filter, its usually checked by blowing air through it (in the arrow direction) if no air flows through or it blows through slowly then its more than likely plugged change it and go from there. sometimes after all avenues have been followed and the problem still exists i have seen the sock on the fuel pump be plugged and do the same. it will run great while accelerating but stall at idle due to not enough fuel pressure.

It could be a problem with the car not getting enough fuel, or it may have something to do with one or more of the sensors, such as the Mass Airflow Sensor. Is your check engine light on? If it is then its most likely a faulty or dirty sensor.

Please chect the EGR valve to see if it is stuck open with a chunk of carbon. This will cause an internal vacumn leak and the car will not idle. To test the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas recirculation) pull it off and try to blow thru it. Also look to see if the EGR pintle is seated. If the car you are having the problem with is a Chrysler then the plate that seals the EGR will likely be completely missing. The fuel filter will not cause this problem as the fuel demand at idle is very low. A clogged Catalytic Converter will also not cause this problem.

AGREE! well kinda because i know for fact Catalytic Converter is not going to make your car do that. The most common reasons are :Idle Air Control Valve, Mas Air Flow Sensor or the EGR valve. Make sure the throttle body is clean. Use only Throttle Body Cleaner. Check your Air Filter make sure its not dirty. And try to Flush your engine every 100,000 miles.

I had this same problem in my 1992 Buick LeSabre several years ago. The problem is: Fuel Pressure Regulator. The reason this happens is that when driving at highway speeds, your engine reguires more gas. There should only be a vapor at low speed or idle. When the fuel pressure regulator is at fault, too much gas is being dispensed, flooding your engine. My mechanic only charged me $100 for the part, but did not charge labor because it was easy to get to it. I went to Riches Auto in Tipton, IA and John fixed the issue. I took the car to European Automotive in Rolling Meadows twice and paid $80 both times, but he could not diagnose the problem. As a result, I have always gone to John at Riches Automotive. Anyway, check and replace the fuel pressure regulator. Let me know how this gets resolved. Thanks.

Is it necessary to warm up your car in the morning?

It is necessary on cold, especial extremely cold days. REASON BEING: Is that it takes the oil to reach it's proper viscosity longer time than on warm days. When you do start car, don't race it or you'll be doing more damage. Let it stay at idle for about 3 - 5 minuets until you see the temperature gauge start to get to move to a hotter position, or better yet, until you have heat. Reason is that thick oil cannot easily flow though tiny holes in crankshaft, push rods not getting oil into small spacers in cylinder block, valve guides, rocker arms and oil control rings leaving a dry cylinder wall, which causing wear to cylinder bore. Sometimes in really cold places, they suggest using a lighter gauge oil.

I will give my answer which is in opposition the the above answer somewhat. In years past when cars had carburetors it was a necessity to warm the engine up before driving off because the engine simply would not run correctly until the carb got warm. Today it is a bad idea to let the car idle for more than a couple of minutes max before driving off. Reason being is that on todays modern engines with computer controlled fuel management systems it is not necessary and is in fact a waste of fuel and pollutes the atmosphere plus harms the converter. Modern fuel injection systems do not need to warm up to work properly as an old carburetor did. They work instantly and the ECU adjusts the fuel/air mixture to compensate. Modern oils of today are also a far cry from what they were decades ago. Modern Oil sticks to all parts better today than in the past. This is not the same formulation that we had decades ago. There is a thin layer of oil on all parts when you start the engine due to modern refinery processes, so you are not causing wear to that engine if you drive slowly until it reaches full operating temperatures. Modern vehicles will warm up very quickly if driven but not so fast if sitting at idle. You are also doing your catalytic converter no good by letting this very rich mixture of fuel/air enter a cold converter that does not work well when cold. Just drive away slowly, avoiding full throttle until the engine is warmed up. This is 2010 not 1955. Things have changed.I can see the above point of view. But there is still a disagreement on oil. yes there will be a very, very thin layer of oil on the cylinder walls, but even sythetic oil will settle downwards ,and on a 20 degree day will be sticky and wipe off in one piston stroke. it still ,in my opinion, takes a little bit of time for oil to thin out as it gets warm. Has enyone ever went to change oil on a 10 to 20 degree day. It barley comes out of the drain hole, unless you let it run for even a minute, can you picture this oil flowing through tiny openings. however, point is well made that idleing and driven slow for the same amount of time will do the same exact thing. Main point is ; don't reve the engine right away, or drive fast for a few miniutes. Note: in places like Alaska, they use a heating source overnight because the car may not even turn over or do it slowly, because the oil is so thick.

Ans 3 -The second answer is the correct one. Letting a modern engine idle for long periods is not good with modern oils being as 'clingy' as they are.

Why would your engine race while in neutral?

AnswerVacuum leak. Sensor going bad that will make a fuel adjustment that in not needed. It tells the computer to add fuel, when the computer does, other sensors say that there is too much fuel and tell the computer to back off, thus the idle fluctuation. AnswerCould be insufficent free play in your throttle cable or a binding throttle cable. Answerif you have a carb, it could have been adjusted wrong, i need mine adjusted since the engine is new...usually needs to be retuned with new exhause, engine parts, and eveyrthing related to that.

Another Answer: The "AIS" (Automatic Idle control) is a step motor controlling a valve that bypasses the throttle valve or Throttle Body butterfly. At some point in time, the valve starts to fail and do not work properly, causing erratic or high idle speeds. Sometimes it can be cleaned, but frequently signals a worn mechanism and it is better to replace it, it should not be expensive. But check that one before purchasing the replacement.

Why would a car run in park but stall in gear?

The first thing I would check is the idle speed, second thing I would look (and listen) for is a vacuum leak, these are the 2 most common causes of your problem. Bill Alley

Check the plugs to make sure they aren't fouled. Then maybe the fuel pump. If it dies when you hit the brakes, that's electrical. I'd say it's the fuel pump, filter, etc.

When plugs are fouled, it probably wouldn't want to start, and brakes aren't electrical and the fuel pump isn't real likely either. Or maybe it ins't any of these, may want to look further down the list for a better answer.

Actually when you step on the brakes, it takes power from the battery or alternator to run the pump for the master cylinder on the brakes. (not true)

Doing so will cause your car to stall if the idle is too low. Turn the idle up and see if it happens again.

Same thing with the in gear driving. Putting the car in gear will drop the rpm to half or less than what it is already. Or maybe there is a better explanation down below.

The brakes have no pump. If they are power brakes, then it has a booster (and the booster uses engine vacuum, not electrical power) you can't adjust the idle speed in a FIed car. When you put the car in gear, the rpm should stay steady since the FI system should adjust for loads on the engine (turning the a/c on, putting car in gear, turning on lights etc) Do a tune up and go from there. By the sounds of it though, this is a lock-up torque convertor problem. The convertor lock is stuck on so the torque convertor is "solid" when you put it in gear.

If it is not an engine problem, it should be a problem with the transmission. When the gearshift is in drive, in this case, the gears get jammed with each other, causing the whole engine/drivetrain to lock up, stalling the engine. You should get a repair as soon as possible.

I know this sounds dumb,but i had a firebird that did the same thing in my shop & the only thing wrong was somebody put the wrong Tail light bulb in the socket & then forced it in wrong so when the brakes were applied it back fed the ignition system & killed the motor-It turned out 2 b a easy fix because I noticed the front running lights would come on when the brakes were applied when it pulled in 2 the shop.

I had that happen to me with my 86 Grand Am, it turned out to be a PCV valve, which was very cheap to fix...you could also try that.

It sounds like something I have been going through, In my case the car has an automatic transmition and the "Lock up celenoid" is the culpret. This little item (costs about 40 bucks give or take) is located in a ussually easy to get to area In my ride it is there right after removing the Trany pan.

What this thing does is causes the Torque converter to "Lock up" to the drive shaft - ussually in an overdrive type thing. When it gets stuck your car will stall.

check your fuel filter & fuel pump/pressure...........also, once you put it in gear it puts a load on the engine, faulty igniton wires may start to "arc" once the load is on, it will cause engine to run like s***t or even stall completely...

Have a 95 Barina C14NZ with auto tranmission. Drives fine, idles fine, but when it is put into gear it stalls. Traced fault to temperature sensor connector (the one for the computer at the back of the manifold -- not the fan one at the radiator). This connector had some minor corrosion which increased the resistance and hence told the computer that the engine is cold, even when the engine was at operating temperature. This caused the engine to idle a bit higher, so when it was put into Drive or Reverse, it would cause the transmission to grab and stall the engine. Wriggling the connector temporarily fixed the problem; and replacing the temperature sensor was the final remedy. Good luck trouble shooting! :-)

I have 93 New Yorker - Car ran fine in park, but any other gear and it stalled. Believe it or not the black box (with the keys) had batteries that were dead. It had to do with the car alarm - New batteries, car runs fine in all gears. You could give it a try.

What could cause a car to stall while driving?

Check for a) a weak spark, b) a weak charging system, or c) a failure of an element of the fuel system.

Vacuum advance, incorrect ignition timing.

A car stalls when the engine receives a sudden massive increase in load (think when you were learning to drive - releasing the clutch too quickly would cause the car to stall by transferring too much friction too quickly from the gearbox to the engine)

If the car only stalls when you are setting out from stationary then better engine/clutch control control is needed, or there is a problem with fuel or clutch. If it is an old car, try putting more choke on when pulling away.

If the car stalls all the time, the general reason is that there is probably either a fuel or an ignition problem causing the engine to cut out. Of course, there could be any number of things wrong with your car if it stalls during normal driving (i.e., not when starting from stationary).

It may need a tune-up.

Try changing the fuel filter. I have a 1984 Mustang with 3.8L V6. On some older cars you tend to accumulate a lot of crud in bottom on fuel tank. And when you get to about 1/4 tank some of it comes up. I changed 2 filters in less than 6 weeks and have not had the problem again. Take a look at the motor mounts. I had a car that would stall when put in drive and while looking at it, when i shifted into gear the motor would tilt forward or back, some wires were being pinched off shorting out and causing the engine to stall when put into drive. If it shakes violently when it dies it is most likey your transmission. It happened to my Dodge.

How do you start your car after it stalls in water?

Water Logged Engine?First, Disconnect battery, and dry the engine and vehicle inside and out as completely as possible. Give attention and time for electrical wiring to dry as well. Wet wiring and harnesses can cause new shorts and burnouts.

Then, see if the engine will spin. You may have to remove the fan to access the crank nut. If it does not turn by hand then there may be engine damage due to water will not compress. This is called hydro-locking your engine. If it does turn then "is the starter locked up" Be sure not to over look diagnosis of electrical related issues due to water.

Lastly if its a stick shift have some one pull you in gear, with fresh oil in the engine of course, and try to get the oil pumping again to achieve some compression.

take all spark plugs out turn engine over a few times then try to start may have to change plugs fuel and oil at least check! I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee that wouldn't start after it rained. The problem was simply water getting onto my battery terminals. I bought a new battery and covered the terminals in a waterproof grease. This may help with your situation. Also, check to see if your distributor cap is cracked, I'm not 100% sure about this idea but give it a shot. If you drive through a puddle sometimes water can get your distributor cap wet of even into the car

I drove through a puddle in a 89' Toyota Camiry and had the car die in motion from a distributor cap that FILLED with water. after ensuring that the engine still turns over, The easiest diagnosis for this is to check to see if you still have a "spark". If there is no spark, the first place to try is the distributor cap, then work your way from there. I was lucky. some mopping up and water dispersant (WD-40) and it runs like a top again.

Ethamax is the best choice if you want to remove water out of a fuel tank without paying a mechanic to remove the tank and do the job for you $$$......!

This is not a complete answer.

If your car stalls in water more than 300mm, 12inches deep, it is possible that water will enter your differential. This is because the cold water cools the diff housing and the air inside, and thus will draw water in the breather pipe. You do not want water in your diff. In this case, you should not have your car rope towed, as this may damage the diff. Have it towed on a trailer, and have the diff drained and re-filled with proper oil. How deep the water is makes a difference.

If there is any chance of water in the cylinders. You need to remove the spark plugs. Turning it over with plugs out should blow out most of the water in the cylinders. I have seen engines that have sucked water through the air filter and into the cylinders. When starting was attempted several rods got bent. Some cars take air in close to the head lights. Some even below the head lights

Could be the fuel pump. To check for sure take the air cleaner off (or the "neck" that goes to the air cleaner) and spray some carb cleaner or starter fluid in it pointing toward the motor. If it runs for a second that tells you there is a fuel delivery problem. You might want to start by checking the fuse to your fuel pump. Sometimes the obvious can be overlooked.

Other causes include a fault Crankshaft Position Sensor or a Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP), and lastly, the PCM.

Why would a vehicle stall unless you pump the gas pedal?

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem (possibly fuel pump) or a clogged fuel filter. Try checking the vacuum lines. I own a 92 Cadillac Seville and the exact same thing happens. I am experiencing a similar problem with my 1999 Subaru Impreza. Generally when my car sits for a day or the temperature drops, the car will sputter upon startup until I push on the gas pedal. Sometimes it will even stall during this sputter. Basically it sounds like it has a fuel starvation problem upon startup on colder days. My check engine light finally came on and it turned out to be a problem with my Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). I took it apart and sprayed it with brake parts cleaner. I haven't had a problem since.

A few more questions before I can give you a better answer -

a. does your car have fuel injection or a carburetor? (If you aren't sure: do you have to warm it up and or pump the gas to start it? If so, it's got a carburetor.)

b. Under what conditions do you have the problem? (Walk me thru a typical example - i.e. car cold/hot ... do you have trouble starting or restarting ... so forth)

c. if your car is carburated, it might be out of adjustment or dirty. If it's fuel injected, it may be as simple as dirty injectors or a small sensor bad/disconnected. You may need an engine diagnostic check.

If it has points I would check the wires from the coil to be sure they are good and have clean connection. You should also check your ground wires and your ignition switch.

What tool is used to get a stripped spark plug out?

Did you strip the actual plug is rounded off or did you strip the plug threads? If you stripped the plug itself and can get to it use vise grips. If you cannot get to the plug then go to your local parts store and tell then what happened. I know Snap On makes a special socket to remove rounded off bolts and spark plugs. Now if you actually stripped the spark plug threads then you may be able to just chase the old threads with a tap and clean them up enough that you can insert a new plug. Use anti-sieze compound and do not over tighten. 13 ft/lbs and no more. If that is not possible you will have to purchase a Helicoil. You local parts store can sell you the correct size and tell you how to use it.

If the 'check engine' light came on in a 2000 Ford Focus and the car stalls at idle when warm what might be wrong?

There is a vacuum hose between the firewall and the back of the motor, it is formed with the 2 ends different diameters. The hose collapses when it is running which causes the engine to stall. I believe this is a dealer only item. Just replaced mine and the car runs fine now.

Autozone will not provide enough help.

Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that none are still active.

Check that the Oxygen sensors are correctly installed and working. Also check with your ford dealership to see if your car is one of many that needs a new FUEL pump. Ford has a TSB on this and will replace it for free... I have a 2003 Focus SVT with all the same problems.

could be a PCV Valve. My 01' Ford Escort with similar engine needed that recently. Appox 5 dollars easy fix.

My 2000 Focus wagon had the exact same problem and I could hear vacuum sucking in the engine compartment. In the end it was two failures at once: 1) the PCV hose failure like everyone else, and 2) a broken white plastic vacuum cap on the intake manifold.

Some folks have luck simply replacing the odd-sized PCV hose with the Ford replacement, but I was not so lucky. In my case both ends of the PCV line (under the intake manifold and connected to the PCV valve) were bust. So, to replace the entire assembly I did the following:

I bought a "PCV elbow" (by Help! auto parts), hose clamps, 3 feet of 7/16" fuel line, and a replacement PCV valve all from Pep Boys. I bought a 1/2" brass hose connector from Lowe's. I connected the elbow to the fuel line with the brass connector and secured the PCV valve in the other end of the fuel line with a hose clamp. I removed the old hoses and PCV valve and replaced them with the new rig. I had to route the new hose around the engine block, but there was plenty of room.

I still had vacuum leaking and a really rough idle after replacing the PCV line. I found the source of the leak by using a length of hose as a stethoscope. It was a rotten, white plastic cap on the intake manifold. I bought a set of rubber vacuum plugs (by Help! auto parts) from Pep Boys and one was a perfect fit.

After both of these fixes the idle was back to where it was a couple of years ago. Good luck!

the vaccume hose is broken and is over heating you need to replace it for only $500

:if nothing has helped so far, check your egr valve as it probably just needs a good cleanin'. egr stands for exhaust gas recirculation and is usually located between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold. it gives metered, pre-heated air from the exhaust to the carburetor and generally has carbon deposits on it. it sounds like yours has an abundance of carbon in the passage causing the car to die when your approaching a stop sign or something.

What damage is done when a manual car stalls?

When the car stalls out, depending on speeds, you can strip part of your transmission. (Basically break the tranny). Most stalls are stripping and what not when it comes to stalling, also I'm pretty sure you can short out some of the systems inside the vehicle.

If your car sputters and even stops running in the morning sometimes especially if it has been wet outside what could be the cause of this?

This was exactly what was happenning to my 1989 Ford Bronco 351W engine. After it warmed up, it worked OK. It turned out to be a stuck/rusty EGR valve. I had replaced a few inexpensive parts until I realized what it was. I simply removed it from the block and sprayed the inside with wd40 and attempted to carefully work it back and forth. This fixed it up and its been working fine for a year now. In an extreme case, you might have to get a new one.

You can buy a spray from any local department store that has an autmotive section. The spray is for wet spark plugs and when you dowse them and your distributor cap it clears the water off.

If you try this and the car fires up on those wet days and eminates your problem then you know it results from damp spark plugs and distributor.

If you have never replaced a new set with wires and cap - do it and reap the rewards.

Likely a spark problem. Might be a cracked distributor cap, or faulty wires. Moisture makes insulators more conductive, and reduces the spark that can be generated, therefore no spark in the cylinder

Why would a car stall after the radiator fan turns on?

A critical voltage drop probably is occurring at either your fuel pump or the electronic ignition module (computer), when a large current load is being drawn by the fan motor. Wait until it stalls and won't start, and then simply umplug the connector to the radiator fan, and see if this "cures" the problem. If so, then check the voltage at the fuel pump wires or relay (should be at least 12 volts with engine running). The control signal to the relay comes from the ignition computer, which shuts down when a critical low voltage is reached (perhaps 9 volts or so). If the fan motor is the problem, and not turning freely,it would be drawing excessive current flow, and need replacement. Otherwise, the problem may be a corroded wire "take off" from the battery "pos" red wire or battery post, or a bad connection at the fuse block, etc. such that the fan motor is "stealing" current flow downstream from a high resistence connection, leaving insufficient current to run the fuel pump. // Jake

AnswerThis problem is a pain. A 93 sunbird SE with 3.1L did the same thing to my wife and after throwing lots of money on everything like plugs and sensors (from the dealer techs), it came down to a TCC. The car would warm up fine and for the first few miles be ok (on cool days). On warm days the car would run ok until she got into stop and go traffic. The fan would come on (coincidence?)and the car would suddenly shudder and even if she put it in neutral it would stall. The advice of making sure all the wiring is intact as well as the fuses and the fluids checked out is a good idea. There is a Technical service Bulletin with GM. I .

Why does a car backfire?

A car backfires because unburned fuel is getting to the muffler. The heat of the exhause system causes the fuel to combust, thus a backfire.

I have just been told that the rubber on my exhaust has split - could this be why the car would backfire?

back fire can be caused by different faults. first is to much fuel because of worn carburetter, or wrong adjusments on carburetter. choke sticking will cause backfire. timing be out of adjustment will cause backfire exhaust leak can cause backfire. bad spark plugs, or plug leads , distributer cap worn of cracked will cause backfire as for fuel in muffler, if it combusted in muffler , the muffler would split open it is not that. and i dont know of any rubber on an exhaust that would take the heat aexhaust manifold gaskets could be problem but if they were rubber they would melt \

It can also be done with intentional modification, such as done in ''Keeping Up Appearances'' British sitcom. A fuel line and an oxidizer line are added to the muffler with a manual rubber bulb pump added to the line as the ''backfire button.'' At a point before entering the muffler, the lines have a pair of backflow valves to prevent the flame from racing into the mixture tanks. Squeezing the bulbs dispense a mixture of pure alcohol and an oxidizer into the muffler to create a reaction. For Onslow's car in the TV programme, copier toner was squirted in the tailpipe for a heavy soot effect on the backfire command.

Having a car backfire can shake off any parts that aren't bolted completely, and can cause the engine to stall because the pressure of the backfire can temporarily disrupt the exhaust release from the engine.

Besides, it would spook horses, cows, or anyone not used to loud noises. So having the car backfire down a Harlem road won't have the same effect, as a car backfiring down a rural city road.
